This gig showcased the band in their prime, a clash of vibrant colours, festive spirit and shimmering pop. Unfortunately for them, it seemed to be the peak of the stardom.
Venue: Rock City
Date: December 8, 2007
Trinny and Susannah would have a field day with this wacky Brazilian sextet’s fashion nonchalance. Sauntering onto the stage dressed as Christmas presents, our eyes are perpetually subjected to a series of retina-melting costumes including a Christmas tree who gleefully weaves in and out of the troupe and Lovefoxxx – the colourful and bonkers ringleader – dipping into her collection of outlandish cat suits three times, the most extravagant being a mirror-ball suit.
Tonight’s Christmas-themed show maybe short but it’s nonetheless spectacular. Comprising of a mixture of fan favourites and newies, they effortlessly fuse Brazilian baile-funk with punk, pop and Martian acid-jazz (probably) and refuse to sit comfortably into a specific genre.
‘Off The Hook’, ‘Alcohol’ and ‘Let’s Make Love to Death From Above’ are unequivocal highlights – the neon-splattered, pre-pubescent audience hollering back every word – and a cover of L7’s ‘Pretend We’re Dead’ is given a kaleidoscopic new coating.
If only every Christmas party could be this much fun.
